I have no connection with the author and purchased the book after seeing it advertised several times on Twitter. It's a great read, fascinating and informative (got me asking my mother questions about Martin Luther!), and it hits a lot of spiritual and inspirational notes. The characters are so beautifully interwoven that this could read either as time travel, reincarnation or both.

I have to agree with one other reviewer that the only main character in the book, Roland Hughes, was rather underdeveloped and unappealing--I always feel that characters who are bored with life or who lack direction are difficult to care about, and in this case, Roland has so little personal integrity that it's rather daring of the author to have him carry the weight of the story on his shoulders. Perhaps if Roland did not remember who he was after he "moves," then his looking into his soul and finding some actual strength of character would draw the reader in. But the author stayed true to his unworthy main character and did not endow him with good qualities that seem to come from nowhere, so that is a sign of a good writer.

The book could use a proofread and a minor edit, some long descriptions of what people looked like could be edited out for characters who appear in only one page and are never seen again, but the very long description at the beginning (of the tree) is actually fun to read and really sets up the rest of the story nicely.

One inconsistency that drove me crazy was that when Roland arrives in the Italy of 500 years ago, he just automatically speaks Old Italian. This was never explained AND when Stefano arrives in modern-day California, HE speaks not one word of English. Also, just how did the money to buy the cabinet get into the cabinet in the first place? In a novel this good and this compelling, I am actually surprised that the author did not address these things. And why no follow up on Sofia's parents? However, I see this is a series, so perhaps these things will be addressed in the second book, which, believe me, I am looking forward to in spite of the gruesomeness. I give it 5 stars because I could not put the book down.

Review This is an interesting book that I really enjoyed reading. I found that it took me a few pages to get into the book but once I was into the book I couldn't stop reading. I was so lost in this book that I had it finished within a few days. I would recommend this book to any reader who enjoys reading fantasy and time travel stories. I enjoyed this book so much I plan to invest in a paperback copy of this book so it has a permanent place in my ever growing book collection. I would like to thank the author for giving me a chance to indulge in such an excellent read.

Rating 5 out of 5 stars
Full disclosure, I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. That out of the way....
This book addresses the problem of social inequality and gender inequality with a parallel story set in two different times. Modern day San Diego and renaissance Italy and Bavaria. The story revolves around Roland Hughes, a professional student, who is having trouble choosing a topic for his dissertation. There is conflict in his long term relationship and a misunderstanding leads to a breakup. On his way home, Roland stops at an estate sale and purchases an Alchemist's cabinet. He decides then and there to write his dissertation on alchemy.

Roland has also been having unsettling dreams. In his most recent, he witnesses a miracle when the wood intended to execute five witches by burning fails to catch fire. Mark Giglio then tells his tale as he bends these two stories in and around one another until they ultimately blur together.

The story itself is interesting and the renaissance details are well researched and bring this time period to life in a way that makes the older story the more interesting of the two. That said, there are so many characters in this older timeline who will ultimately affect the denouement that it can be hard to keep track of their background stories and as new characters are introduced it can be a struggle to figure out where the new character came from and how they will ultimately affect the story. I thought the story ended rather abruptly, almost as if the author got tired of it, but there are going to be other stories set in this world so the end is really more of a pause for breath.

There are many good things about this book and the story, if you are willing to go searching for them. I did enjoy the story and do recommend it. Others have given the book 5 stars so my drawbacks are certainly a matter of personal preference. You will enjoy this if you like complex, multi-layered stories with a lot of characters.
Intriguing story with interesting twists, romance, deceit, time travel, magical realism. I enjoyed the multiple stories and how the author tied these together and the spiritual learnings. Highly recommend!
I read this story. It is a good story
